Formation of GAMPA

The Historical Journey of Ghana Alternative Medical Practitioners Association

The Establishment

The Ghana Alternative Medical Practitioners Association (GAMPA) was established in 1994 as a government-backed federation to oversee and regulate the practice of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) in Ghana.

During this period, both the Traditional Medicine Bill and the Alternative Medicine Bill were being drafted under the leadership of E.N. Mensah, who was then the Head of Institutional Care at the Ministry of Health and later became the Head of Medical Services.

The Legislative Journey

1994

GAMPA was founded as the official regulatory body for alternative medicine practitioners in Ghana, coinciding with the drafting of both Traditional and Alternative Medicine Bills.

2000

The Traditional Medicine Bill was finalized and passed into law, marking a significant milestone for traditional medicine practice in Ghana.

"The Alternative Medicine Bill remained unapproved due to an executive intervention by former President Jerry John Rawlings. His personal experience with a leg fracture, which was successfully treated at Aponkyi Clinic, influenced his interest in traditional medicine."

The Government's Vision

Recognizing the increasing role of alternative medicine in healthcare, the government initiated GAMPA as a unifying body to bring together various practitioners under a structured and recognized framework.
